Paediatric Intensive Care Subspecialty Nursing Program

Course Aim

This education program provides nurses with specialty knowledge and skills to effectively and safely care for children in intensive care settings.

Program Overview

The Paediatric Intensive Care Subspecialty Nursing Program is an evidence-based paediatric curriculum focusing on competencies essential to care for children in intensive care settings. The program includes both in-class and practical hands-on experiences to facilitate knowledge into practice. Integral to the learning is an emphasis on child- and family-centred care, and interprofessional collaboration.

Participants will gain knowledge and skills in the nursing assessment, care delivery, and evaluation of care related to paediatric critical illnesses. Participants will learn and apply supportive care measures relevant to intensive care populations including, but not exclusive to psychosocial care, patient and family education, bereavement and palliative care. At the end of the program, simulated patient scenarios and objective structured clinical exams will determine participants’ skills and abilities in rapid response assessment, respiratory support and ventilation, haemodynamic monitoring, as well as the care of arterial lines, central lines and external ventricular drains.

Program faculty includes SickKids expert facilitators and clinical mentors who work with nurse participants to support high quality programming.
