Course Aim

Program Overview

The Neonatal Intensive Care Subspecialty Nursing Program is an evidence-based paediatric curriculum focusing on competencies essential to care for critically ill neonates. The program includes both in-class and practical hands-on experiences to facilitate knowledge into practice. Integral to the learning is an emphasis on child- and family-centred care, and interprofessional collaboration.

Participants will gain knowledge and skills in the nursing assessment, care delivery, and evaluation of care related to neonates and infants in critical care settings. Participants will learn and apply supportive care measures relevant to neonatal patient populations including, but not exclusive to developmental care, patient and family education, bereavement and palliative care. At the end of the program, competency-based assessments will determine participants’ skills and abilities in essential practices such as neonatal assessment, central blood sampling and x-ray interpretation.
