Antimicrobial Stewardship Program Experience

Course Aim

The aim of this program is to develop pharmacy professionals with advanced knowledge, training and expertise in the planning, implementation and maintenance of an antimicrobial stewardship program.

Program Overview

Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs (ASP) have been defined by the Infectious Diseases Society of America as “Coordinated interventions designed to improve and measure the appropriate use of antimicrobials by promoting the selection of the optimal antimicrobial drug regiment, dose, duration of therapy and route of administration.” At SickKids, our ASP team has a mandate to promote this stewardship through evaluation and monitoring of use of antibiotics in patient care in order to improve patient-related outcomes and create a hospital environment optimal for patient care.

The Antimicrobial Stewardship Program Experience offers a wide variety of clinical learning opportunities for pharmacists, focused on the planning, implementation and maintenance of an antimicrobial stewardship program. Learners will be supported to perform as change agents in the appropriate use of antibiotics in the hospital setting, and provided with customized learning activities and dedicated mentorship. This program is highly adaptable and may be customized to fit your unique organizational context.
