Paediatric Emergency Point-of-Care Ultrasound Trainership

Course Aim

The aim of this program is to provide trainees with increased clinical competence through an immersive trainership located at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.

Program Overview

The Paediatric Emergency Point-of-Care Ultrasound Trainership is an immersive program bringing Canadian and International practicing physicians to The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, for a 4-12 week training experience. Trainees will gain clinical competence throughout the duration of the program and benefit from specialized lectures and personalized coaching from our point-of-care ultrasound faculty, focusing on their selected applications. This experience is enriched with a weekly journal club, image review sessions, small group scanning shifts and procedural simulation workshops. Following completion of the program, participants will be able to clinically apply an advanced set of point-of-care ultrasound skills in a paediatric emergency medicine setting. These clinical skills will result in direct organizational improvements to patient care and workflow.

Develop desired skills in the bedside interpretation of ultrasound images including the imaging and diagnosis of patients with cardiac, biliary, renal, thoracic and soft tissue issues and complaints. As the placement progresses, trainees will develop advanced skills in the use of point-of-care ultrasound for patients with ocular and advanced cardiac issues as well as ultrasound application in emergency procedural care.
