SickKids and its international network of partners and affiliates are part of a vibrant community of healthcare professionals dedicated to sharing knowledge and providing opportunities for individuals and institutions to flourish. We understand that ongoing education and training is fundamental in maintaining the high level of knowledge and expertise our healthcare professionals require. We also know it’s important to share knowledge with colleagues around the world.
SickKids offers paediatric specialty education and training services that are customized to the learners’ specific needs, and can take place at SickKids or in their home country.
Our key programs are:
- The International Learner Program (ILP)
- Continuing Education Services
- Clinical Mentorship
- Facilitation Services
These programs can be provided as a stand-alone offering or in a combination, including additional Clinical Mentorship opportunities in the learners’ home countries.
Launched in 2009, the International Learner Program (ILP), certified as a Leading Practice by Accreditation Canada offers international healthcare professionals the opportunity to take part in knowledge acquisition through observation or practice experiences, including hands-on training related to specific areas of practice. The ILP is unique amongst educational programs in North America, as it provides its practice stream participants with the chance to engage in supervised patient care. Through this program, international learners develop their own learning objectives, are mentored by expert staff, and receive one-on-one knowledge translation coaching, in addition to formative and summative evaluations, and a nine- to twelve-month follow-up assessment.
To apply to or learn more about the ILP, please review the following information.
Integrating educational programs from a variety of professional practice areas, Continuing Education Services serves to meet the evolving educational needs of the international healthcare community. Through partnerships with departments across the hospital, the University of Toronto and other academic institutions, SickKids can ensure that international organizations and their healthcare providers are able to access to evidence-based, high quality paediatric subspecialty education. Educational content can be delivered on-site, in our partners’ home countries or via in-person sessions at SickKids in Toronto.
